In an X post, Coinbase addressed concerns about customer data exposure, clarifying that the cryptocurrency exchange itself did not suffer a data breach.
"Coinbase has not had a data breach," the official Coinbase Support account on X stated.
Rather, Amplitude, a third-party analytics vendor, experienced a security incident that impacted a small subset of Coinbase customer contact data, among other Amplitude customers. This clarifies the recent development as a vendor-related security incident, not a breach of Coinbase infrastructure. Along these lines, Coinbase said it found no evidence of unauthorized access to Coinbase systems, and customer funds were not impacted.
In accordance with its legal obligations, the crypto exchange added that it was notifying customers affected by the vendor-related security incident and the relevant regulatory agencies. Coinbase's clarification remains important amid broader concerns about data security across the cryptocurrency industry, where third-party service providers have introduced risks to crypto users.
For Coinbase users, the main difference is that the exchange says its analytics vendor is to blame, not a breach of its own systems. However, customers who might be affected should remain on the lookout for suspicious communications that could exploit the exposed information. This leaked information could be exploited by bad actors to craft convincing phishing messages, impersonate exchange support staff, or attempt other forms of social engineering.
Users are urged to be wary of any unsolicited messages claiming to be related to account security. They should not click on suspicious links, should never share passwords or two-factor authentication codes, and should access their accounts only through official channels.
