Ethereum Economic Zone Unveils Three Cross-Chain Breakthroughs at Devcon

The Ethereum Economic Zone has announced three new demonstrations involving CoW Swap, Safe, and post-quantum signatures, showing how applications on Ethereum rollups can interact directly with the mainnet within a single transaction.

Summary

  • Ethereum Economic Zone announced three technical demonstrations at Devcon involving CoW Swap, Safe and post quantum signatures, with transactions coordinated between Ethereum mainnet and rollups.
  • CoW Swap demonstrated how users on a rollup could execute trades using Ethereum mainnet liquidity and receive tokens within the same transaction without a separate bridge or additional signature.
  • Safe demonstrated coordinated wallet ownership changes and treasury access across Ethereum networks, allowing account permissions to be updated and verified within a single transaction.
  • Developers verified a Falcon post quantum signature on a rollup and used the result to authorise a mainnet transfer, with the team reporting a 91% reduction in gas consumption.

In a November 4 announcement, the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) team said the developments represent three firsts for synchronous composability between Ethereum’s base layer and its rollups, with live demonstrations scheduled at Devcon in Mumbai.

The demonstrations cover a decentralized exchange trade using mainnet liquidity, coordinated changes to multisignature wallet ownership across networks, and the verification of a post-quantum signature on a rollup before authorizing a mainnet transfer.

Developers Friederike Ernst and Eduardo Antuña Díez were scheduled to present the technology at 1:00 p.m. IST on Lotus Stage 1, where attendees could see the transactions in action.

Ethereum Economic Zone enables rollup trades using mainnet liquidity

The first demonstration involved CoW Swap, where a user on a network identified as Rollup X signed an order that was filled using liquidity available on Ethereum mainnet.

According to the EEZ team, CoW Swap’s solvers executed the trade against mainnet liquidity, with the resulting tokens delivered back to the rollup within the same transaction.

The process required no separate bridge transaction, waiting period, or additional user signature.

Normally, users moving assets between Ethereum and its layer-2 networks must interact with bridging infrastructure before accessing liquidity on another chain. Depending on the bridge and network, completing the transfer can involve separate transactions and confirmation periods.

EEZ’s approach allows the connected networks to coordinate execution so that the different parts of the transaction either succeed together or fail together.

The developers said this could help newly launched rollups access existing Ethereum liquidity without depending entirely on their own trading pools, where limited liquidity can leave users paying higher slippage.

The demonstration builds on an earlier milestone in October, when the project completed its first atomic mainnet transaction involving 0.001 ETH.

As crypto.news previously reported, the transaction coordinated a transfer between Ethereum and a rollup alongside a state update, establishing an early working example of the framework’s cross-chain execution model.

Safe demonstrates coordinated wallet ownership changes across chains

The second demonstration focused on Safe, the multisignature wallet infrastructure commonly used by decentralized autonomous organizations and cryptocurrency treasury managers.

EEZ said developers demonstrated the first atomic ownership changes between Ethereum layer 1 and layer 2, alongside access to treasury assets held across multiple Safe accounts.

In the example, a user could update wallet owners and access treasury funds across different networks through coordinated execution.

The team explained that ownership changes made to a Safe account on Ethereum mainnet could be read and verified from the connected rollup within the same transaction.

Such coordination addresses a problem that can arise when organizations maintain separate Safe accounts across multiple blockchains.

Changes to authorized signers or wallet permissions generally need to be carried out on each network, which can leave account configurations temporarily out of sync.

The demonstration showed how the EEZ framework could coordinate these updates without requiring users to complete separate ownership-management processes across the participating chains.

Post-quantum signature verification uses 91% less gas

The third demonstration involved post-quantum cryptography, with developers verifying a Falcon signature on Rollup X and using the result to authorize a transaction on Ethereum mainnet.

According to EEZ, a mainnet smart contract called the rollup, checked the signature verification result, and authorized a transfer within the same transaction.

Falcon is a digital signature algorithm designed to resist attacks from quantum computers, which could eventually threaten some cryptographic methods used in blockchain systems.

The team said performing the verification directly on Ethereum mainnet would require approximately 5.5 million gas.

By carrying out the computational work on the rollup and allowing mainnet to use the verified result, the demonstration achieved a reported 91% reduction in gas consumption.

The example concerned the verification of a post-quantum signature and its use in transaction authorization, not a replacement of Ethereum’s existing signature system.

Developers presented the result as another use case for synchronous composability, particularly for computationally demanding operations that can be handled outside the base layer while retaining access to mainnet contracts.

EEZ development progresses toward Gnosis Chain integration

The demonstrations follow several months of development since Gnosis, Zisk, and the Ethereum Foundation introduced the Ethereum Economic Zone at EthCC in April.

The framework was designed to address fragmented liquidity and applications across Ethereum’s growing collection of layer-2 networks, while allowing participating chains to settle transactions on Ethereum.

Its development has since become part of Gnosis Chain’s planned transition into an Ethereum rollup.

In August, GnosisDAO approved the transition through governance proposal GIP 153, which received support from 123,158 GNO and cleared the required participation threshold.

Under the approved plan, Gnosis Chain would eventually retire its existing validator set and use Ethereum for settlement and economic security.

The transition is expected to preserve existing applications, account balances, contract addresses, and the chain identifier, with an initial deployment targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, depending on technical readiness.

Meanwhile, Consensys introduced its institutional interoperability platform during Devcon, with planned support for the EEZ standard among its future integrations.

EEZ developers have made technical walkthroughs available through build.eez.io and eez.dev, while inviting developers to try the experimental network through the project’s Devcon booth or remotely.
