The Solana network has hit a significant milestone in its quest to overcome its early hurdles, successfully going 1,000 days without a network-wide outage.
This feat stands in stark contrast to Solana's past, when the blockchain experienced some notable network disruptions. One of the more significant outages occurred in September 2021, when a spike in bot traffic from Grape Protocol IDO transactions led to a surge in transactions that overwhelmed validators and hindered consensus, resulting in a roughly 17-hour network outage.
The Solana network experienced similar problems in April 2022, with a large traffic spike due to an NFT mint that led to a roughly 7-hour outage. Another outage happened in June 2022, when a bug involving durable nonce transactions caused block production to stop for roughly 4.5 hours. Finally, in September 2022, the network experienced a fork due to a bug in the consensus layer, which led to a halt in block production lasting over 6 hours.
The final major outage occurred back in February 2023, when abnormal block forwarding overwhelmed Solana's Turbine block propagation system, leaving validators stuck in a vote-only state and leading to a coordinated restart. This would prove to be a monumental event for Solana in terms of its engineering progress.
Solana has seen a string of updates and engineering innovations by its developers in an effort to improve the network's ability to avoid the failures that had plagued it in the past. Some of these features include stake-weighted quality of service to better prioritize traffic from staked validators. The network also saw networking innovations such as QUIC that provide more flexibility in dealing with spam and congestion. There have also been updates to deduplication logic following the February 2023 outage. Additionally, the network has seen innovations such as a local fee market and other scheduling improvements to discourage users and bots from spamming the network with duplicate transactions.
Emphasizing network resilience
Recently, Solana has emphasized that network resilience should be taken seriously. In a September 2026 update, the project shared that the network has seen 100% uptime since February 2024 and has continued to handle large amounts of traffic. It also highlighted a major infrastructure provider experiencing a routing failure in August 2026 that caused validators representing nearly 29% of the network's stake to go offline, but this did not result in a halt in block production. The project uses this as an example of increased fault tolerance.
For Solana, this 1,000-day milestone is not just a success in terms of network uptime. It's a statement and a demonstration to the world that a network once mocked for outages can now support serious financial and on-chain use cases.
